On Saturday night, against a familiar foe in a familiar setting, the Chipola Lady Indians repeated history, beating Gulf Coast with a last-second shot for the state championship. It was Chipola’s second time doing so in the last four years.
Pearl Johnson joined former Chipola point guard Tojalyn Atmore as the second Lady Indian to beat Gulf Coast with a miraculous shot at the end of the state title game.
Atmore made a halfcourt buzzer-beater in 2005 to give Chipola its first women’s state basketball title over Gulf Coast.
This time, it was a driving layup by Johnson that just snuck in the basket with 3.5 seconds to play that did the trick for Chipola, giving the Lady Indians a 68-67 victory.
Johnson played the entire second half in place of the injured Ashlie Billingslea — the Lady Indians’ starting point guard. Johnson scored 20 points in the game, including 13 in the second half, to lead the Lady Indians.
