Leesburg High girls headed for state for the 2nd straight year, February 17, 2008

LEESBURG -- Throughout her career, whenever Leesburg needed a play, Pearl Johnson was usually the player who delivered.

Leesburg needed Johnson to come up bigger than ever Saturday night.

The Yellow Jackets (29-1) found themselves trailing Fort Walton Beach (26-5) early in the fourth quarter and Johnson answered the call, hitting 15 of her game-high 28 points in the final quarter and leading Leesburg to a 66-52 victory.

The victory means 5A Leesburg, ranked No. 1 in the Florida Sports Writers Association's state poll, will be making a trip to Lakeland and the state tournament for the second year in a row.

"For a minute, I got scared," Johnson said. "But then I started thinking about Lakeland again and how badly we wanted to go back."

With those thoughts in her mind, Johnson scored 12 of her team's final 21 points as Leesburg rallied.

"[Leesburg] Coach [Mark] Oates called me over and asked me if I wanted to go back to Lakeland and if I did, it was time to step up," said Johnson, who has signed with UAB.

Fort Walton Beach's Tenaria Milton, the Vikings' leading scorer with 16 points, fouled out midway through the fourth quarter and without her leadership on the floor, the Yellow Jackets took control.

Johnson had help from fellow seniors Tenia Manuel (10 points) and Angie Felton (13).

"Pearl is a gamer," Oates said. "When the game is on the line, that is when she is at her best."
State tourney play begins Wednesday.
