Nail-biting season opener, November 19, 2008

Leesburg's Baylie Bridges gets a shot off over the South Lake defense Tuesday night Nov. 18, 2008 at Leesburg High School.

LEESBURG -- Season-opening games aren't supposed to be nailbiters.

Basketball coaches often try to schedule patsies to give their players an opportunity to get accustomed to game situations and to get their legs underneath them.

Leesburg and South Lake, apparently, forgot to follow that coaching philosophy.

Waneta Carlisle scored 25 points and freshman point guard Baylie Bridges scored 19 in her varsity debut to lead Leesburg High School to a 75-74 overtime win against South Lake.

"South Lake is a good team and I love the way they play," Leesburg coach Mark Oates said. "They play hard and they don't quit. I knew we would have our hands full, but we're a young team and we have to play tough teams to get everyone understand how we do things here.

"We're going to get everyone's "A" game, so we can't just go through the motions and expect to win and this game proved that to our kids."

South Lake took a 43-34 halftime lead and led by as many as 13 in the second half. The Eagles, however, struggled down the stretch with mental mistakes and fatigue.

South Lake weathered several Leesburg runs in the fourth quarter. Bridges drained a 3 pointer with 2 minutes, 31 seconds to play to cut the Eagles' advantage to 60-58. A 3 pointer by Courtney Waite and a pair of free throws by Tamica Mora extended the lead to 65-58 with 1:19 left, but Tiffany Cosgrove sank two free throws to cut the deficit to 65-60 with 1:11 to play.

Bridges was fouled behind the 3-point stripe with 50 seconds to play and sank three free throws to slice South Lake's lead to two, 65-63.

Mora hit 1 of 2 free throws with 21 seconds left to regain a 3-point advantage, 66-63.

With eight seconds to play, Carlisle hit 1 of 2 free throws and Latoya Foster grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with six seconds left.

Foster, one of the few returning from last year's Class 5A Final Four team, sank both free throws to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period. South Lake struggled offensively and failed to score for nearly three minutes while Leesburg built and 71-66 lead.

The Eagles, however, refused to go away and a 3 pointer by Mora with 52 seconds left cut the lead to 73-71.

After a timeout to regroup following a Yellow Jackets' turnover, Carlisle stole a cross-court pass with 25 second to play and drove for layup to ice the game.

Despite the close loss, South Lake coach Mandy Shafer refused to look for an infamous "moral victory."

"Success usually is determined by the final score, so we can't count this as a win," Shafer said.

"Still, I'm proud of this team. A lot of people probably didn't think we much of chance to beat Leesburg in their gym, but these girls believed they could do it. We played hard and we didn't quit. We knocked down some outside shots and got some big baskets on the interior, and we played well defensively for most of the game.

"Beating Leesburg would've been a big deal for us, even if it was the first game of the year. We can build off the effort we got tonight. I'm not happy with the result, because we lost, but I am very happy with our effort."

The Yellow Jackets were the more balanced team. Leesburg was able to score from the perimeter and in the paint with more consistency.

South Lake, on the other hand, relied on its ability to get perimeter scoring from Mora, Waite and Marjorie Thompson. The trio scored 59 of South Lake's 74 points, but Waite and Thompson fouled out before overtime to put most of the scoring pressure on Mora.

Mora finished with 24 points, followed by Waite's 19 and Thompson's 16. Nikki Holtzer added 11.

Besides Carlisle and Bridges, Leesburg got 11 points and 14 rebounds from Foster and nine points and 11 rebounds from Ashley Lanier.

Bridges, however, may have left the biggest impression on Oates. The freshman earned the starting job at the point, replacing former standout Pearl Johnson, who graduated.

Oates said Bridges performed well, although he is quick to deflect any comparison to Johnson.

"You don't just replace Pearl Johnson," Oates said. "She brought so much leadership and so many intangibles to the floor, but Baylie looks like she is going to do a lot of nice things for us. She's a gym rat, like Pearl, and always wants to work on her game.

"If I called at 2 a.m. and said I wanted to get together and practice, Baylie would yawn and say 'Okay coach Oates, I'll be right there."

Oates knows, however, he's going to need more than the effort of one freshman if the Yellow Jackets are going to return to the Final Four. He said his young team is going to have to learn how to win and to play their best every night.

"We have bullseyes on our chests," Oates said. "We are a state championship game for most of the teams we play. Our kids have to get used to that and respond to the pressure that goes with playing at Leesburg."

Yellow Jacket Depth Stings NCT, December 27, 2008

Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO Nature Coast's Alexis Helfand tries to shoot over the Leesburg defense during Saturday morning's game at South Lake High.
By CHRIS BERNHARDT JR. | Hernando Today

Through one quarter, it appeared Nature Coast Technical might put together a surprise to open the Florida Citrus Shootout at Groveland-South Lake High.

The Lady Sharks met Leesburg Saturday morning, facing a Yellow Jacket squad that reached the state semifinals last season, in the opener of the holiday tournament.

Nature Coast stormed out in front early, but couldn't overcome Leesburg's superior depth and athleticism, getting outplayed over the final three quarters in a 53-43 defeat.

"They're just so much deeper than we are. They wore us down," Nature Coast Head Coach Travis Lamle said. "I kind of thought they'd press us more than they did. Their size and athleticism killed us. They dominated on the glass.

"We started out so well, I thought we'd be able to do more stuff against them than we did. It was the most physical game we've played all year. We don't see that anywhere else we go. But that's why we come to these things."

By the end of the first quarter, Leesburg (11-2) had played nine players, compared to eight by Nature Coast (10-4).

Four players scored in double figures for the Yellow Jackets: Waneta Carlisle (14), Ashley Lanier (12), Baylie Bridges (10) and Jaleesa Blue (10).

Only the starting forward tandem of Alexis Helfand (14) and Alyssa Joens (10) duplicated that for the Lady Sharks, though guard Jenn Marshall had nine.

The team's leading scorer, Shareka Maner, had a quiet day with four points and four rebounds, though she blocked three shots. Point guard Crystal Anthony also posted just four points along with four assists and three steals.

On the glass, Leesburg won the rebounding battle 34-26, led by Blue's 12 and Latoya Foster's seven. Helfand paced Nature Coast with seven boards.

Hot start

Helfand scored eight points in the opening period as the Lady Sharks officially held a 19-17 lead.
When the first quarter ended, the scoreboard originally had Nature Coast with 21 points, but the official scorekeeper did not credit a basket to Marshall, leaving her with five points in the period.

The disagreement on the score proved meaningless, as the Yellow Jackets doubled up the Lady Sharks in each of the next two quarters.

They took a 29-25 advantage into halftime and went up 39-25 on Blue's second three-pointer of the quarter. She scored all of her points in the third and all but two of her team's in the period.

A fast break lay-up by Lanier made it 51-35 with 3:27 left to play, giving Leesburg its biggest lead of the day.

"It took us a little while to get warmed up, get the kinks out, but I told them I'm proud of their effort today," Leesburg Head Coach Mark Oates said. "We came out against a good team, a well-coached team, and found a way to get the W.

"...I think there was a point where we got some easy baskets and they missed some easy baskets and once we got a lead we were able to do the things we want to do. I don't think they handled pressure as well as the coach wants them to and I thought we rebounded well."

The tournament resumes Monday, when Nature Coast will play Apopka at 3:15 p.m. On Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. they'll take on Cocoa.

"I thought we looked great in the first quarter," Lamle said. "We knew what we were getting into. I thought we had them scouted well but you can't make them put lay-ups in.

"I know nothing about Apopka. Cocoa, they're going to be athletic and big. We don't see that in the Hernando/Pasco/Citrus area. We've got to hope our system basketball negates some of their athleticism."

East Ridge stops Leesburg, January 09, 2009

Leesburg High School's Jaleesa Blue fumbles the ball as East Ridge High School's Selina Archer avoids a collision, in Leesburg, on Tuesday, January 6, 2009. East Ridge won the game by one point 44 to 43.
Loss was Yellow Jackets first against a Lake County team since 2004

FRANK JOLLEY
Sports Editor

LEESBURG -- East Ridge High School girls basketball coach Angela House believes her team deserves to call itself the best team in Lake County.

The Knights earned that right when Selina Archer scored 26 points, including the game-winning basket with 2 minutes, 7 seconds left in overtime, Tuesday to pace East Ridge to a 44-43 win against Leesburg.

The loss was the Yellow Jackets' first against a Lake County team since 2004, when East Ridge defeated Leesburg in the district tournament.

"This was a huge win for our girls and our program," House said. "They know what Leesburg basketball represents in Lake County and to beat a team that has been the (Class 5A) Final Four is a big deal. I think it shows how much we've grown as a team. These girls have worked very hard to reach this point and I think they deserve to call themselves the best team in Lake County."

East Ridge (11-5) trailed until Archer, East Ridge's 6-foot-5 center, hit a turnaround shot with 3:30 to play in the third quarter to tie the game at 23. She scored again two minutes later to give the Knights their first lead of the game at 25-23.

Jaleesa Blue, however, drained a three pointer at the buzzer to put the Yellow Jackets back on top, 28-27, heading into the fourth quarter. Blue's bomb was Leesburg's only three pointer in the game's first 24 minutes.
In fact, the Yellow Jackets went nearly seven minutes in the third quarter without a field goal.

"Our shot selection was horrible," Leesburg coach Mark Oates said. "We didn't work for shots and settled for too many jumpers. Our plan before the game was to take the ball right at (Archer) and get her into foul trouble. We got a couple of shots blocked and started going away from what wanted to do.

"We didn't come out with a lot of intensity and I was disappointed in our performance. I tell these girls that we can't just walk on the floor and expect to win, but they seem to think like that sometimes. I don't want to take anything away from East Ridge, but this wasn't Leesburg basketball tonight."

Leesburg (12-4) had an opportunity to put some distance between themselves and East Ridge when Rebecca Roncone was whistled for a personal foul and a technical foul with 3:47 left in the game and leading 34-32. Waneta Carlisle went to line for four free throws, but hit only two.

After Leesburg turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass, Archer was fouled and hit a pair of free throws with 3:32 to play. East Ridge managed another steal and Roncone spotted up behind the three-point line and gave the Knights a 37-36 lead with 3:08 to play.

Roncone backed that up with 15-foot jumper with 2:45 left for a 39-36 lead.

Leesburg countered with a three pointer by Baylie Bridges to tied the game, but a runner by Tiana Lloyd gave Knights a 41-39 lead with 1:32 left.

A jumper by Leesburg's Latoya Foster tied the game and sent the contest into overtime.

In the extra period, Jade Alston staked the Knights to an early lead with a free throw and Leesburg's Jakia Johnson hit a turnaround to put the Yellow Jackets back in front 43-42 with 2:34 left, setting the stage for Archer's game winner.

"I'm so proud of this team," House said. "We came in mentally prepared to play and didn't let Leesburg take us out of our game. Our goal every game is take care of the basketball and use our inside-outside game and show the discipline to take good shots. When you have a 6-foot-5 player, that's what you do. Most teams have to double-team her, so that leaves someone open and she has to find them.

"Selina is getting more comfortable with that role and she's not letting teams frustrate her as much as she did earlier in the season. When we play like we're capable of playing this is the result we can expect."

Oates said he will spend much of today's practice restoring the work ethic and dedication that his past teams have played with. He believes Tuesday's performance was an aberration and not an indication of things to come.

"We might not even shoot a basketball during practice (today)," Oates said. "We always talk about playing with pride and discipline, but we didn't play with either (Tuesday). East Ridge did. That's something that I will get fixed before we play another game."

Archer was the only player for East Ridge to score in double figures. Roncone added nine points and Lloyd scored six.

For Leesburg, Foster led the way with 15 points, followed by Carlisle with nine. Bridges had seven and Johnson added five.

Off The Court with Angie Felton, February 15, 2012

Feb. 7, 2012
If you want to know about Louisiana Tech senior Angie Felton, you better ask one of her teammates.

The 5-foot-9-inch guard isn't one to reveal the scouting report on herself.

Quiet. Reserved. Discreet. All adjectives that describe the sharp-shooter who signed with the Lady Techsters out of Gulf Coast Community College two years ago.

"I'm a private person," Angie said, very quietly.

Her teammates would agree with the assessment, although they do see another side of Angie.

"She is a quiet person, but once she gets to know you, she will open up," said teammate and roommate Tavasha Anderson. "She's funny; kind of a quiet funny. You wouldn't expect her to say some of the stuff she says. She's kind of subtle. She's just crazy like the rest of us."

Thankfully, Tavasha doesn't mind talking about her roomie.

"She tries to play like she can't cook, but she can," Tavasha said. "She just likes helping me prep and then she will clean the dishes. She can cook, she just doesn't like to.

"And she loves bread. Every time I cook she asks me what kind of bread we are having. If it's not croissants, she wants rolls, if it's not rolls, she wants biscuits. She loves bread. She eats a lot. She's small but she eats a lot."

End of the scouting report from the kitchen.
