Clearwater Tops Leesburg to Reach Final, February 2007



LAKELAND - Clearwater High broke away in the fourth quarter to capture a 69-61 victory over Leesburg on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the FHSAA 5A Girls Basketball State Finals.

The Tornadoes led by a shaky 49-48 at the start of the final period and used strong guard play and the inside scoring of Lauren Lee to earn a berth in the tourney finals Friday at 7 p.m. against Winter Haven.

Clearwater (29-2) is making its fourth appearance in the finals, all under coach Tom Shaneyfelt.

Leesburg (28-3) couldn't match the Tornadoes' balanced scoring.

Lee had 17 points for Clearwater while guard Keona Dixon had 16, fellow back-courter J'Beria Davis 15 and Brittany Carannante added 12.

Leesburg's Lynette Pearl Johnson scored a game high 22 points for Leesburg and Angela Felton had 14 while Tenia Manuel scored 12.

Clearwater shot an impressive 50 percent from the floor (25-for-50), while Leesburg was 20-for-70.
