UMaine women beat Troy, advance to Dead River Co. Classic title game

ORONO — The University of Maine women’s basketball team appears intent on using the Dead River Co. Classic to end some frustrating trends.

The Black Bears advanced to the championship game of their annual tournament for the first time in five years Friday, grinding out a 66-53 victory over Troy in the first round of the 19th Dead River Co. Classic at Alfond Arena.

Coach Richard Barron’s Black Bears (2-2) take on Brown, a 55-47 winner over Evansville on Friday, in Saturday’s 2 p.m. title contest.

“We still obviously have a lot of things to work on, but it’s nice that we get a chance to learn those lessons without losing,” Barron said. “It’s a very quick turnaround (for Saturday’s game).”

Troy (0-4) and Evansville (0-4) meet in Saturday’s noon consolation contest.

A UMaine team member also overcame a long period of frustration on Friday.

Senior forward Samantha Wheeler, who had been struggling with post-concussion symptoms, returned to action for the first time in almost a year.

“It felt great,” said the former All-America East second-team pick. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt so nervous before a game.”

UMaine beat Troy with its aggressive defense, determined rebounding and strong free-throw shooting.

The Bears committed 25 turnovers, in part because of the quick pace they created with their defense, but they also forced the Trojans into 29 turnovers.

UMaine came up with 16 steals, including three each by Brittany Williams and Ashleigh Roberts, and was able to minimize fouls (11).

“The big thing for us was the energy on defense,” Barron said. “We were very disruptive, especially early.”

“We did that without ever giving them a one-and-one foul,” he added. “I was very pleased with that, not fouling off the ball.”

Troy, which was without starting point guard Sophie Kleeman because of a foot injury, had trouble establishing much offensive continuity. However, the Trojans shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half.

Williams, a senior guard, scored a game-high 15 points and provided four assists and three steals to lead the Bears. Shareka Maner contributed 10 points and six rebounds, and Corinne Wellington posted 10 points in a balanced effort.

Freshman Becca Knight of Alfred chipped in with eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Amber Dillon added eight points.

UMaine outrebounded Troy 41-30, pulling down 19 offensive boards.

“We wanted to focus on getting rebounds this game,” Knight said. “We got a lot today, which was good, but we didn’t get points off of it.”

Tenia Manuel (Leesburg High School, Leesburg, Florida) paced Troy with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while DeAngela Sword provided 12 points.

The Bears first established a cushion with a 9-0 flurry that came during a span of 1:33 seconds late in the first half.

Maner got it started, hitting a short jump hook from the baseline off a feed from Dillon. Wellington followed after a Troy turnover, scoring from underneath off a crisp entry pass from Williams.

The Trojans then turned the ball over again, which led to a Williams 3-pointer off a penetrate-and-pitch pass from Dillon that gave UMaine a 21-12 lead with 4:06 left in the half.

“We’re going to face teams who are going to be all over us and pressure the ball a lot and we have to be able to maintain our composure and make good decisions,” Williams said.

UMaine expanded its advantage to 16 points in the second half. Maner’s three-point play, her close-range hoop off a Courtney Anderson steal and pass, and Anderson’s 3-pointer provided an 8-2 run that gave the Bears a 52-36 lead with 10:32 remaining.

Troy responded with a 12-2 surge that included two baskets by Jamesha Blake and fought back within six points at 54-48 with 7:16 to play, but UMaine was able to regroup and push its lead back to 10 before closing it out.

“We did not do a good job of taking care of the basketball. We got in a hurry,” said Troy coach Michael Murphy. “We gave up way too many offensive rebounds.”

Wheeler last played in the 2010 Dead River tourney, but suffered a concussion in practice on Nov. 29, 2010.

Once given the OK, she has gradually increased her practice participation and recently was cleared to return to game action. Wheeler logged 12 minutes and contributed two points, two rebounds and two steals.

“I definitely had a lot of jitters, but it was such a great feeling to finally be able to be back on the floor with my teammates again,” she said.

Former Lady Jackets Standout Tenia Manuel will be entering her senior season at Troy University in 2011. Manuel was Troy's 2nd leading rebounder last season. She made 46% of her field goal attempts and had a 76% free throw average. She expects to play a bigger role in her teams success in her senior season. Gerald Lacey:

Good morning Tenia how are you?

Tenia Manuel: 

Good Morning Mr. Lacey I am doing fine.

Gerald Lacey:

You had a great career at Leesburg, you played with Louisiana Tech's Angela Felton and Former UAB player Pearl Johnson since you were in middle school. How did it feel when you attended your first practice at Troy University and it finally sunk in that you were no longer going to be on the court with them?

Tenia Manuel:

Well it felt weird. It was a new atmosphere, new girls, and it just took a lot to get used to.

Gerald Lacey:

What has improved in your game since you arrived at Troy University?

Tenia Manuel:

Since I have arrived at Troy, my shooting has improved tremendously . I have developed a good 3 pt shoot, and I have worked on becoming better when I drive to the basket.

Gerald Lacey:

You have always had a very strong work ethic on the court and in the classroom. You have been an inspiration to other young lady's who have been a part of the Lady Jacket basketball program. Your resume speaks for it's self. With that being said what are some of your goals for your senior season at Troy?

Tenia Manuel:

My goals for my senior season, would be to lead my team to a conference championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Try to average a double-double, and to be a leader for my team on and off the court. Other then that, just be there for my teammates when they need me.

Gerald Lacey:

Your parents and Coach Mark Oates have always instilled in you the values of education and I know that they are very proud of academic achievements as well as your athletic accomplishment. What are you majoring in at Troy?

Tenia Manuel:

I have changed my major once. I started off as a accounting major, but that quickly changed after I had some minor set backs in the classes. My current major is Marketing.

Gerald Lacey:

Is basketball in your future plans after you finish your career at troy whether it is playing or coaching?

Tenia Manuel:

Basketball is in my future. Since I was little I have always wanted to play ball professionally. As far as coaching goes, there is a very good chance I could get into that once I've stopped playing.

Gerald Lacey:

Tenia you are a part of the Leesburg High School 1,000 Point Club and you helped end a 30 year State Final Four drought. Those accomplishments will be a part of Jackets fans for conversations forever. How disappointing was it to go to back to back State Final Fours and leave without a state title?

Tenia Manuel:

Going to the Final Four those two years was a big accomplishment for us. It would have been even better if we would have won. It was disappointing, just knowing that if every person would have did a little more then we would have been in the championship game. I try not to think about it as much because those same girls are playing in college just like me. Hopefully one day I can get another game against them.

Gerald Lacey:

What kind of impact did coach Mark Oates have on you as a person and a player?

Tenia Manuel:

Old Coach Oates. He is a major part of my success. As my coach, he is the one that pushed me to work hard in practice and to be a leader. If it wasn't for me playing ball with him, I don't think that I would have made it very far. As a person, he was always there to talk to and every now and then get a good laugh in.

Gerald Lacey:

What kind of advice do you have for 2011 graduates Jaleesa Blue and Ashley Lanier as they prepare to begin their college careers?

Tenia Manuel:

For my graduated Lady Jackets, I would just like to say always remember what you have been taught. You might go off to another school, but you are always going to be a Lady Jacket. So when you in their practicing and working out, just remember how the Lady Jackets do it. As the game gets longer, the Lady Jackets get stronger.

Gerald Lacey:  I have been a friend of your family (Manuel's, Wiggins, Scott's) for many years. They are close knit group. What kind of impact did they have on you growing up instilling in you the need to get your college education?

Tenia Manuel:

My family has always stressed the importance of going to college. I would here them say, "If I knew then what I know now, I would have done this and that." They wanted me to be able to enjoy life and do everything I can to be successful in life.

Gerald Lacey:

Your parents Frank and Kemmely Manuel who I have known personally for many years. Whenever I see them and I mention your name their faces light up and they are very proud you. How important has been for you to have both parents in the home with you to instilling in you good christian values?

Tenia Manuel:

Having both of my parents with me has been a blessing. I am glad that I was brought up in the church and that I continue to strive to be a good christian. My parents were always telling, even now, that you need to pray and ask God to help you make it through, and it has been a big help in my life. He has blessed me with great parents.

Gerald Lacey:

Tenia it has been nice talking with you again and wish you much success in the 2011-2012 campaign. Tenia remember "GO HARD"

There are three players on this year’s Leesburg girls basketball team who rank among the top 15 scorers at the school during the eight years Mark Oates has been the Yellow Jackets head coach.

Leading the list of current players is junior Baylie Bridges, who finished up last week with 709 career points, placing her seventh on the list. One spot behind Bridges is senior Jaleesa Blue, who has signed with FAMU, at 701 points. Also on the list is sophomore Ashley Perry, who is 12^th  with 401.

Pearl Johnson, who helped Leesburg to the state tournament in 2007 and ‘08 is the leading scorer, with 1,413 points. Two of her teammates on those teams, Angie Felton and Tenia Manuel, are third and fourth on the list with 1,150 and 1,117 points, respectively. No 2 is Sharece Taft, a 2006 graduate, with 1,283 points.

100% of Mark Oates players graduate and go to college, February 22, 2011

Leesburg Head Coach Mark Oates has just earned his 3rd State Final Four appearance with his Lady Jackets, but that not the number he is the most proud of. In order for a young lady compete in Oates program they are not only required to graduate from high school but to enter into college after graduation.

Oates has produced a 100% graduation rate and every one of his players have gone on to college. I asked coach Oates about some of the details of the programs that he has instituted in order to produce such staggering numbers.

"We have mandatory study halls for all freshmen and all upperclassmen with GPA's below 3.5," said Oates. "We also tell our student/athletes that if they are gonna play for the Lady Jackets they have to go to college," said Oates. "This is done in their first freshmen meeting."

Oates runs a squeaky program his record is impeccable and speaks for itself. Oates puts in 14 hour days in on non game days and up 20 hours on game days. He is a tireless worker and loves the kids and the Leesburg community. He never seems to stop teaching his players about life principles and how to be a success after basketball. He understands the tradition and the history of Leesburg Basketball and does a good job of instilling that pride among his kids. I asked him to give me details on what a typical day is like running the Lady Jackets basketball program.

"During the season on a regular practice day I leave home at 6:45 a.m. and usually get home around 8 p.m.," said Oates. "On a game day I leave at same time and depending on where the game is played I might get home around midnight, grade film and do stats until around 2:30 a.m. and then back at it again."

Oates certainly has set the standard for girls high school basketball in Lake County. His program is modeled by many in the state of Florida. At the end of the day wins and losses pale in comparison when he asked to elaborate on how he feels when a young lady comes into his office as freshman wanting play basketball and leaves the program a woman going to college.

"I think it feels like a a proud father would feel," said Oates. "I don't have any birth children of my own but I imagine that's what it feels like."
