Led by the play of Annette Miller and Daphney Wiggins, the Leesburg Fighting Jackets girls basketball team took a 61-37 win over Apopka for the Class 3A District 8 championship Saturday night.
The Jackets head to Cocoa Tuesday night for a regional matchup.
Miller, the Jackets ball handling and shooting guard, tossed in a game-high 20 points in the contest played at Kissimmee. The lone senior on Coach Betty Crenshaw's squad is averaging over 20 for the past four games.
Wiggins, a 5-10 sophomore center who has not seen the Jackets lose since she became eligible at the semester change, finished with 15 points.
Lajuana Spell also hit double figures for Leesburg with 12 points.
As in each of the three victories en route to the District 8 crown, Leesburg's margin of victory was more than 15 points. In fact, the 24-point spread which they handed Apopka was the Jackets' easiest game of the tourney, on paper.
"Like I said before, this is really an exceptional group of girls, "Crenshaw said recently about her squad. "We love each other, we really do."
Like it did against Bishop Moore in the semifinals, Leesburg jumped on Apopka, which was seeded second, in the early going. By halftime, the Jackets were out in front 32-14.
