Curtis leads Beach in rout of LeesburG, December 16, 2011

Stephen Berend/For the Savannah Morning News
Beach’s Amber Curtis dribbles past Leesburg defender Joharra Russell during Friday night’s first-round game in the Savannah Holiday Classic. Curtis had 15 points in Beach’s 81-47 win.

Amber Curtis is no threat to Paula Dean, but then Dean has no chance in a one-on-one game with Curtis.

Curtis, the best player on the best team in the region, had an excellent all-around game in leading unbeaten Beach (10-0) to an 81-47 rout of Leesburg (5-6) in an opening round game of the Savannah Holiday Classic basketball tournament Friday night at the Beach gym.

Beach, playing in the Columbia Square division, will play the winner of the Alcovy-Statesboro game at 8:30 tonight at the Beach gym.

The Bulldog senior had 15 points, five assists, four steals and two blocked shots in the easy win over the Florida team.

Afterwards she revealed her talents aren’t limited to the basketball court.

LEESBURG -  The Lady Jackets of Leesburg High School 3-2 (2-1) got back into the win column Thursday night with a 51-36 win over Ocala Vanguard High School 1-4 (0-2). The win moved Leesburg into second place in Class 6A District 5 play. The Jackets are ranked number 5 in the latest Orlando Sentinel Super 16 Girls Basketball Poll.

The win snapped a two game losing streak by the Lady Jackets and put them back over the .500 mark with a 3-2 record

"The team entered the game more focused than on Tuesday night," Leesburg head coach Mark Oates said after the game.

Leesburg was lead by 2012 University of West Florida signee PG Baylie Bridges with 23 points. Bridges shot 73% from the field (11-15) and added 5 assists and 5 steals on the defensive end.

"Baylie has been playing at a high level for four years," Oates said on his teams leading scorer and leader. "But yes the fact that she knows where she will be next year has to be a comforting feeling."
Bridges is Leesburg leading scorer this season and has taken on the leadership role for Mark Oates Lady Jackets squad. Bridges has taken her game to another level since signing her letter of intent. Oates was asked about the importance of Bridges signing her letter of intent during the NCAA early signing period.

"Baylie has been playing at a high level for four years," Oates said on his teams leading scorer and leader. "But yes the fact that she knows where she will be next year has to be a comforting feeling."
Junior Joharra Russell backed up Bridges' effort wit 18 points.

Alex Wilhelm had 12 points and 4 assists to lead the Lady Knights. Cyerra Jones added 10 points and 8 rebounds, and Melisha Dillon had 6 points and 8 rebounds. Emily Williams pulled down 12 rebounds for the Lady Knights.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak by the Yellow Jackets and lifted them back over the .500 mark with a 3-2 record.

Joharra Russell backed up Bridges' effort wit 18 points.

Marshanique Kelly added six points and six rebounds, followed by Temetria Simmons, who had three points and six rebounds.

Leesburg will travel to Port Orange Atlantic High School Friday night and Ocala Vanguard (1-4) will host Gainesville on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

LEESBURG - The Lady Jackets of Leesburg High School has begun its quest for a return trip to Lakeland for the State Finals. Head coach Mark Oates is in his ninth year at Leesburg and has a record of 175-53 overall. Oates has never had a losing season at Leesburg and has guided his team to the State Final Four three times in the last five years. The Lady Jackets have been to five State Final Four overall and did it back to back twice.

I had a chance to speak with Coach Oates this morning one on one about the state of the Lady Jackets Basketball program.

Here is an exclusive interview with Leesburg High School Girls Basketball Head Coach Mark Oates

Carver Heights Quarterback Club Presents:

Gerald Lacey One On One With Coach Mark Oates

Coach Mark Oates:
Good Morning Coach Oates

Coach Mark Oates:
Hi Gerald

Gerald Lacey:
What does your starting PG and 2012 University of West Florida Signee Baylie Bridges bring to the table for your program?

Coach Mark Oates:
"She's been my starting point guard from Day 1,  She comes in every day ready to work. She's a true leader in every sense of the word."

Gerald Lacey:
Leesburg has been traditionally a full court press team. Will you be a team that utilizes the press defensively?

Coach Mark Oates:
We will press some, probably not as much in years past due to the type of players that we have this year. I think we will be more of an in your face half court team.

Gerald Lacey:
What are some of your goals for this season's team?

Coach Mark Oates:
Our first goal every season is to win our first game and we accomplished that but, ultimately to be a State Champion.

Gerald Lacey:
What are some of the similarities between this season's team and last year's team?

Coach Mark Oates:
This team has a core group from last season in Baylie Bridges, Ashley Perry, Joharra Russell and Coco Carter. We have some new faces and I feel we have more interior depth. Jaleesa Blue (Florida A&M University) and Ashley Lanier (St. Petersburg College) are missed in the post area.

Gerald Lacey:
Will Ashley Perry be your number one option on offense?

Mark Oates:
We don't place a value system on our options, we try to get the ball to the player in the best position to score.

Gerald Lacey:
Could you tell us a little about newcomer freshman Jasmine Coleman?

Coach Mark Oates:
Jasmine is going to be a fine player one day. She is struggling a lil with the transition from Middle School to high school. She is a good shooter and will help us this season.

Gerald Lacey:
Thank you for taking out time in your busy schedule to do this interview Coach Oates. Remember do it the Yellow Jacket Way "GO HARD".

Coach Mark Oates:
You are welcome Gerald, I will.

Bridges scored 19 points in a 54-13 win over Lake Weir. She entered the game with 994 points and now has 1,013 points.

"She's been my starting point guard from Day 1," Leesburg coach Mark Oates said. "She comes in every day ready to work. She's a true leader in every sense of the word.

"She's happy to reach that milestone, but her main concern is winning and helping her teammates get better."  READ MORE CLICK BELOW

Baylie Bridges is college bound!

Before she heads out of town, she's got a little more work left to accomplish.

A point guard on the Leesburg High School girls basketball team, Bridges signed a national letter of intent with the University of West Florida in Pensacola on Thursday during a ceremony in the school auditorium. The senior then headed off to get herself ready for an evening game against Apopka on the final night of the Lady Jackets Preseason Classic.

Lady Jackets standout Baylie Bridges will play her home games next season in the University of West Florida FieldHouse
Bridges has been a four-year starter for the Yellow Jackets, having replaced All-State standout Pearl Johnson. During her tenure at Leesburg, Bridges has endured countless comparisons to Johnson -- who is considered one of the top players ever to wear a Yellow Jackets uniform.

During her career at Leesburg, Johnson helped the Yellow Jackets to two state Final Four appearances.

(JOSHUA C. CRUEY, ORLANDO SENTINEL)
With her senior year still ahead of her, Bridges has helped drive Leesburg to one Final Four.
Bridges was the leading scorer on last year's 23-7 team. She averaged 13.6 points per game and 2.4 assists per outing.

She enters Tuesday's season opener against Ocala Lake Weir needing only six points to reach 1,000 for her career. Bridges is fifth on the team's scoring list.

Tenia Manuel, fourth on the list with 1,117 points, expects to be passed by Bridges early in the season.

"Well she will definitely pass Tenia Manuel on the scoring list," Manuel said Thursday. "Good job Ms. Bridges!"

Sharece Taft is second on the all-time list with 1,283 points. Johnson, however, is first with 1,413 points.

Bridges is third on the assists list with 240, trailing Angie Felton (310 assists) and Johnson (505). In addition, she is ninth in steals with 187 and is 11th in blocked shots with 12.

University of West Florida Womens Basketball Head Coach Shannan Bergen
Based in Pensacola, the University of West Florida competes in the NCAA's Division II as a member of the Gulf South Conference. The Argos are coming off an 11-15 campaign and are coached by Shannan Bergen, who has held the post for 12 years.

Bergen has an overall record of 173-155 during her time at West Florida and is a two-time Gulf South Conference East Division coach of the year.

In Thursday's first game of the Lady Jackets Preseason Classic, New Port Richey Mitchell beat Merritt Island 43-32.

Leesburg opens its regular season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with a home game against Ocala Lake Weir.

Boys Soccer
Rain Barnett and Shane Thompson scored goals for Lake Minneola Thursday to lead the Hawks past East Ridge 2-0 in a Class 4A-District 6 contest.

Lake Minneola stopped 15 shots.

The Hawks (2-1 overall and 1-0 in Class 4A-6) will host Leesburg at 7 p.m. Monday.
Girls Soccer

Leesburg got four goals from Angel Rome on Thursday in a 6-2 win against East Ridge.

Chelsea Mudd scored two goals and had two assists for the Yellow Jackets.

Sydney Williams and Hannah Jordan contributed assists for Leesburg.

Leesburg had 21 shots on goal, while East Ridge was limited to eight.

The Yellow Jackets (2-0 overall) will host Brooksville Hernando at 7:30 p.m on Tuesday at H.O. Dabney Stadium.

Eustis 7, WG West Orange 0

Brooke Smith scored five goals to lift Eustis to a 7-0 shutout against Winter Garden West Orange.

Lauren Smith added one goal and three assists for the Panthers.

Jerisa Esquivel scored one goal, and Alika Keene had one assist.

Hannah Wilson stopped three shots in goal for Eustis.

The Panthers improved to 4-0 with the win.

Leesburg - Leesburg Lady Jackets head coach Mark Oates has been busy this summer getting team ready for another run at a State Final Four. Three starters return from last year team including the top two scorers from 2010-2011. Senior Coco Carter had a great summer and the 2011-2012 will be her finest season as a Lady Jacket. I had a chance to sit down with Coach Oates this morning and talk about the upcoming season for the Lady Jackets.

Here is an exclusive interview with Leesburg High School Girls Basketball Head Coach Mark Oates

Carver Heights Quarterback Club Presents:

Gerald Lacey One On One With Coach Mark Oates

Gerald Lacey:
Good morning coach Oates how are you?
Coach Mark Oates:
I am doing fine this morning Gerald.

Gerald Lacey:
Coach Oates when took over the program at Leesburg did you ever imagine being one of the elite teams in state.

Coach Mark Oates:
Our goal from the time I became the Head Coach in 2003 was to become the best program in the state of Florida.

Leesburg head coach Mark Oates led the Lady Jackets to the programs 16th District Championship in 2010-2011

Gerald Lacey:
Is this the largest tournament that your Lady Jackets ever been invited to.

Coach Mark Oates:
We played in this same tournamen last year but the name of the tournament has changed. Last year it was called the Brothers, Inc. Tournament. The same group is still coordinating the tournament. Last years tournament had 64 teams from all over the United States.

Gerald Lacey:
What will you do to prepare your team for this event?

Coach Mark Oates:
We will prepare like we always do, we want to be well conditioned as well as disciplined.

Gerald Lacey:
What will your expectations be of your point guard and second leading scorer Baylie Bridges this season?

Coach Mark Oates:
I expect Baylie to continue to be the team leader that she has been since the day she stepped foot on Leesburg High's campus.. Baylie is a dream come true and I would love to have 12 Baylie's. I feel she is probably the most underrated player in the state.

Gerald Lacey:
Which colleges are interested in Baylie Bridges at this time.

Coach Mark Oates:
Troy University, University of West Florida , Florida Gulf Coast University , Jacksonville University, Samford University and others.

SG Joharra Russell will be counted on heavily during her junior season in 2011-2012
Gerald Lacey:
Are you excited about the upcoming season with your top two leading scorers Ashley Perry and Baylie Bridges returning.

Coach Mark Oates:
I am very excited about the return of Baylie and Ashley Perry as well as Joharra Russell and Coco Carter.

Gerald Lacey:
You have been impressed with Coco Carter this summer what does she bring to the table in terms of her basketball skills and court savvy?

Coach Mark Oates:
Coco will be the surprise player in central Florida this season. We had a great summer and an awesome experience at camp down at the University of West Florida in Pensacola. Coco has the ability to get hot from long range and hit 4 or 5 three pointers in a row. She has not shown what kind of player she really is in previous seasons but I think this season she will quickly become a fan favorite. Coco has such a vivacious personality and makes everyone around her feel at ease. She can get down and dirty when she has to also.
Coco Carter will have a breakout season this year for the Lady Jackets. She is capable of  taking over a game with her 3 point shooting. Carter will give opposing coaches and defenses nightmares in 2011-2012 scoring 3 point baskets.

Gerald Lacey:
How will you compensate for the loss of Jaleesa Blue and Ashley Lanier in terms of rebounding?

Mark Oates:
Jaleesa Blue and Ashley Lanier were outstanding rebounders but we will become more of a team of rebounders next season.

Gerald Lacey:
Does this team believe it can get back to Lakeland and what has been your motto for achieving that goal this year.

Coach Mark Oates:
"If go out and play our style of basketball -- tough defense -- and play our best game of the season, I believe we can beat anyone in the state."

Junior Forward Ashley Perry will be on every college in the nation wish list by the end of the 2011-2012 season. She led the team in scoring her sophomore season and has had a great summer.

Gerald Lacey:
Thank You Coach Oates you and your Lady Jackets help make my job so much fun and easier. I thank God that you have allowed me total access to your team and your program. You are a winner coach Oates on and off the court. May God continue to bless you and your program. Remember "GO HARD".

Coach Mark Oates:
Thanks Gerald and you keep up the good work brotha.

CLASS 4A REGION 2 GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW LEESBURG AT LAND O LAKES

Sophomore Joharra Russell is averaging 9.6 PPG and 4.1 RPG for the Lady Jackets

Lady Jackets will have to win on the road tonight

LEESBURG - Leesburg Head Coach Mark Oates will take his Lady Jackets on the road tonight to face Land O Lakes for the Class 4A Region 2 Girls Basketball Championship. The Lady Gators are undefeated at home this year riding a 19 game home win streak. Oates has led his team to the Elite Eight 3 times in the last five years. With a win tonight the Lady Jackets will secure their 5th State Final Four appearance in the program's storied history.

"I think we are finally playing within ourselves," Oates said. "We are doing a better job of doing the things that we have to do to win."

The Lady Jackets dominated the backboards Tuesday in a 52-36 win against Gainesville Eastside in a Class 4A-Region 2 semifinal game. They will need another strong performance on the backboards by Florida A&M University signee Jaleesa Blue and senior Ashley Lanier. Blue led the Lady Jackets on the boards with 17 and Ashley Lanier finished with 16.

Senior Center Ashley Lanier grab 16 rebounds in the Regional Semifinal win over Gainesville Eastside. Lanier is averaging 6.7 PPG and 7.8 RPG
"I thought last night [a 52-36 victory over Gainesville Eastside in the region semifinal] may have been our best defensive effort of the season and we did a much better job of rebounding," said Oates.

Three Lady Jackets are scoring in double figures, sophomore sensation Ashley Perry is leading the team in scoring averaging 13.7 PPG.  Oates also expects a big performance from junior guard Baylie Bridges who is the Lady Jackets second leading scorer averaging 13.2 PPG. Jaleesa Blue is the Jackets leading rebounder with 11.4 RPG and is averaging a double double for the season.

Florida A&M signee Jaleesa Blue the Lady Jackets leading rebounder is averaging a double double game this season with 11.3 PPG and 11.4 RPG.
If Land O Lakes wins tonight it will be the first team in Pasco county since Zephyrhills in 1986 to reach the state tournament. The Bulldogs lost to Gibbs in the championship and is the only Pasco County school to reach the final four. The Lady Gators are led by Senior guard Shantel Sweet and sophomore Simone Brown. Brown is a transfer from Wesley Chapel High School played in the Class 4A-Region 2 final game last season. She will be the only Lady Gator with Regional Final's expierence.

For Brown, the Land O' Lakes sophomore is the only player on the team that knows what to expect but isn't giving any tips on what to do – just what not to do.

"Last year, we had a sleepover the night before (the region final) and we lost," said Brown, who is averaging 13.3 points and 12.5 rebounds a game. "We sat around and ate candy and didn't get much sleep. I told Coach (Laurie Tyszko) I didn't want to do that this year."

Brown said she hasn't said a lot to the other girls about what to expect today.

"I don't want them to get nervous," she said. "It's a great experience but can be intense, too. Hopefully, we'll use that intensity in the game this year."

Land O Lakes Head Coach Laurie Tyszko is in her first year as coach of the Gators.

"I hope we get to state," Tyszko said. "I think our team is good enough. We were really nervous against Gulf. We had wanted to play them all season. We thought we were going to win but you never know. We've accomplished a lot this season."

Leesburg (22-6) at Land O'Lakes (24-2)

About Leesburg: The Yellow Jackets have won 13 of 14 games and are looking to return to the state finals after making back-to-back appearances in 2007 and '08. Jaleesa Blue, Baylie Bridges and Ashley Perry average double figures in scoring.

About Land O'Lakes: The Gators are on a 19-game winning streak and are undefeated at home. Senior guard Shanel Sweet has gone over the 1000 point mark in her career,  averages 18 points and five assists a game while sophomore Simone Brown contributes 13 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Looking ahead: The winner will face the St. Petersburg Lakewood-Naples Barron Collier winner in a state semifinal. Leesburg was a Final Four team in 1976,1977, 2007 and 2008.
